2009 has been an immensely successful year for an array of MOBO artists such as Chipmunk, N-Dubz, JLS, Tinchy Stryder, DJ Ironik, Alexandra Burke and many others Having been previous winners of the coveted MOBO Best Newcomer Award, N-Dubz and Chipmunk have both enjoyed their most successful year to date in 2009, fulfilling the potential that MOBO first recognised in them. Chipmunk for instance scored his first UK No.1 single with “Oppsy Daisy” and also released his official debut album “I Am Chipmunk” which went on to reach No.2 on the UK albums chart. N-Dubz also faired extremely well with the release of their sophomore album “Against All Odds” which reached No.5 on the UK albums chart. Dappy, Tulisa and Phaser then saw out 2009 with their sold out national headlining tour. In recognition of how far they had come, both Chipmunk and N-Dubz were honoured at the 2009 MOBO awards with Chipmunk winning “Best Hip Hop Act” and N-Dubz winning two awards for “Best Album” and “Best UK Act”.
Tinchy Stryder has also had an incredible year in 2009. First came a huge smash single, the aptly named “Number 1” which featured a collaboration with N-Dubz’s Dappy. The track became Tinchy’s first No.1 single and stayed at the top of the charts for almost a month. Tinchy then released his “Catch 22” album which reached No.2 on the UK album charts and was certified Gold. If that wasn’t enough, the rapper then set out to make his mark on the fashion and blogging worlds with his “Star in the Hood” clothing line and online blog. Tinchy’s incredible year culminated in a breath taking performance at this years MOBO awards. Click here to read our MOBO profile for Tinchy Stryder.
It would be impossible to talk about 2009 without mentioning the phenomenon that has become JLS. Since coming second on the X-Factor last year the boys have catapulted themselves into the collective consciousness of fans across the UK. With their huge No.1 hit “Beat Again” , the boys proved they are more than just runners up on a talent show. Their follow up single “Everybody in Love” also topped the singles charts and if that wasn’t enough, a week later their debut album went straight in at the top of the album charts. JLS then cemented their success by performing at this years MOBO awards. The boys also walked away with two award wins for “Best Newcomer” and “Best Song”.
As the year draws to a close we are looking forward to seeing what 2010 will bring and will be following the progress of our MOBO nominees and winners including Master Shortie, DJ Ironik, Alexandra Burke, Laura Izibor, Mr Hudson and many others.
