The MOBO introduction to gospel music
MOBO gives recognition to our homegrown artists with the Best Gospel Act category, won last year by Triple O - and gospel music has been around for many years.
You may have heard of Mary Mary, best known for their UK hit single ‘Shackles’ back in 2000, but what else do you know about gospel?
Here is a selection of songs from some of my favourite artists for you to enjoy.
Kirk Franklin - A God like You
A favourite of many, Kirk Franklin is a three times Grammy award winning artist; the pioneer of urban contemporary gospel music makes the genre relatable to young people. His 2011 album Hello Fear is a great listen for the whole family to enjoy. Check out this fast, quirky song:
Fred Hammond- You Are The Living Word
Another multi Grammy award winning gospel artist (and my all-time favourite) is Fred Hammond. Fred and his moving RFC choir have been gracing our ears with soul and love for over 25 years, and he is not stopping either. His new album God, Love and Romance will help make a bright start to your day - or a great unwind in the evening:
Israel Houghton- All Around
Israel Houghton’s infusion of jazz, African influences and the occasional sprinkling of rock captivates a wide audience. Quite often he can change a fast up-tempo song into a soft melodic mode, as heard in this video live from South Africa. The six time Dove Award winner's music is so powerful it's enjoyed by both a Christian and non-Christian audience:
Marvin Sapp- Never Would Have Made It
Marvin Sapp is a man who doesn't make music for the sake of it. In drawing from personal experiences, his music is filled with a lot of sentiment while being relatable. This is one of his biggest and most treasured tracks:
