Today marks 9 years since the untimely death of the beautiful songstress Aaliyah Dana Houghton.
She represented all that was extraordinary about R&B in that generation. Her fusion of angelic serene vocals, sassy dance routines and tom-boyish style made her stand out as a female R&B singer who didn’t need to flash all of her flesh in a bid to appear sexy. (A far cry from today’s breed of female R&B singers). I was only 14 when she passed away but I remember recording the video for ‘Are You That Somebody’ from TheBox (yes, before the days of the MTV takeover!) and watchin
g it religiously until I knew all the moves! Between Aaliyah, Mya and Janet Jackson, those days of R&B will go down in history. If Baby Girl was still alive today you have to wonder where the likes of Keri Hilson, Ciara and Nivea would be musically. They would not be able to compete with her unique style and presence that was felt all over the world. Although it’s been almost a decade since her demise, she still remains relevant and her music still loved (take Drake’s ‘Unforgettable’ ft Jeezy that samples Aaliyah’s ‘At Your Best’ featured on ‘Thank Me Later').
Rest In Peace Aaliyah, we will always remember your dark shades, crop tops, baggy jeans, gorgeous side swept hair and pure voice….Often Imitated Never Duplicated…..xxx
