Anuvahood, “The First UK Urban Comedy” brainchild of triple threat (writer/director/actor) Adam Deacon and childhood friend Michael Vu, who also stars in the film, is a UK comparison to the cult US spoof movie “Don’t Be a Menace In South Central While Drinking Gin and Juice In The Hood”.
The plot sees Deacon, starring as a Timmy Mallett vest wearing wannabe badman, who is a bit of a wasteman, and can’t seem to get anything right. After quitting his job at “Laimsburys”, no typo here, in pursuit of (“Bigga Tings”) a talentless rap career; things just get from bad to worse, leading him to drug dealing in attempts to turn things around. Unfortunately this lands him and his misfit crew which includes Femi Oyeniran (KIDULTHOOD/ADULTHOOD) as "Bookie" and Ollie Barbieri (SKINS) as "Enrique", in trouble with local lisping bully Tyrone (Richie Campbell); eventually results in a tone switch with a graphic display of violence towards the end.
After the screening of the film last week I asked Adam to give me three words, which he thinks best sums up the film and he said “Authentic, Original and hopefully funny”. It was definitely authentic and original and I had myself a few laughs, mainly at the beginning when K’s ignorance and stupidity is laid bare. It is also nice to see yet another Urban movie make it to the big screen and also good to see the involvement of the real residents living on the estate, where most of the film was shot.
Would I recommend you go and watch the film, YES; because it is a first of its kind. Will everyone enjoy it NO; it all depends on your humour and your background knowledge on what is being spoofed.
Anuvahood is out now in cinemas. Peep the trailer below.
