If you said to the normal person on the street 18 months ago, ‘Tinie Tempah’, they probably would have replied ‘who!’ But now, 18 months down the line, with a platinum selling album and some of the biggest tracks the world has heard in a long time, the three time MOBO Award winner Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu Jr. has now penned his life down on a breakdown on his success.
In the style of an annual year book, the book features many pictures of Tinie Tempah to make it more of a gallery than an account of the real Tinie Tempah. Nonetheless, you do get brief descriptions on the big moments of the man’s life to put him in the position he has made for himself.
The book starts at the beginning, Tinie’s childhood and ends with his dreams for the future. Breaking down each chapter into easy to digest nuggets of gold about his life and his interests, Tinie gives his fans the option whether to read about whatever they want.
It is interesting to read about Tinie as a child. How his house was open to any visitors, his mum would cook for the 500 just in case, going to his cousins in Wembley and his love for drawing cartoon characters is something you might not expect. His inspirations came more from movies such as Space Jam rather than from music. Then he talks about his naivety about living in Peckham and how good it was for him and his family to move to the suburbs as he learned about people he knew getting stabbed. From his growth into becoming a rebellious teenager and going into music, you wouldn’t think that the man behind ‘Pass Out’ and ‘Frisky’ listened to Country and Western star Dolly Parton through his mother. Then comes the start of what we know and love about the man, his growth into becoming an international Hip Hop star. Tinie dedicates a little paragraph to the first rap he ever wrote and describes how embarrassed he is to have even concocted it.
After his school days, Tinie Tempah created a lot of work for himself to get him to the top fast. This meant pushing his music standard to new boundaries so he would become the man everyone recognises now and meeting the right people to make this happen. One of these men was Labrinth and after the release of ‘Pass Out’ the rest is now history.
Tinie Tempah goes into detail about all the songs on his debut record ‘Disc-Overy’, his show time ritual and his personality. A nice feature as it shows the fans the real Tinie Tempah and how he likes other people and activities besides Hip Hop and music.
Perhaps a little early for Tinie Tempah to release an auto-biography as there are still chapters left to complete. More albums are yet to be written and many more stories have yet been divulged into since the British star in still only in his early twenties. However, this book does give you the insight into one of the biggest stars around at the moment and with Christmas just around the corner, it will make a great stocking filler.
