Over the weekend the MOBO team were invited down to JJ’s SoulShack, a monthly live music night that showcases the talents of both signed and unsigned singers, musicians, writers and producers, with the best in Reggae, Soul, Hip Hop, Funk and Old School R’n'B. Held at Archways Dusk till Dawn venue, JJ’s Soul Shack is a fun slice of the Caribbean in the heart of busy north London. Decked out in palm trees, water features and mini beach huts, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail and listen to some sweet soul music.

The night itself features live performances from some of the most exciting emerging talent on the U.K scene. Performing on the night MOBO attended were some really exciting up and coming new artists. Opening up the night was CEO and Founder of Soul Shack Juliette Ashby, who also happens to be a very talented singer and songwriter, mixing traditional reggae and R&B with a fresh contemporary London style.
Currently working on her debut album, Juliette is part of a new movement of artists establishing their own businesses in order to not only launch their own career but also to provide a platform for all the other talent that would otherwise go unheard. “I launched SoulShack Productions in 2008 with my partner Peter-Paul to help try and promote the wealth of the new young musical talent that I felt was going unnoticed in the UK” Since then the night has gone from strength to strength and has recently celebrated its first birthday.

After a great introduction performance from Juliette, singer songwriter Daniel E Walker performed a soulful acoustic set whilst accompanying himself on guitar. Combining reggae, folk and soul, Daniel displayed an impressive vocal ability and had some beautifully written songs. Think Newton Faulkner meets Brian McKnight.

Next was Brit School graduate Brooke Bailey. At just 18 years old, Brooke is already poised for great things. Possessing a powerful and mature voice well beyond her years/ Brooke is currently at work on her debut album and has been performing on the live scene around London for the last few months and building up her fan base. Make sure you check her out!

North London born singer/songwriter Jake Reid then took to the stage and backed by his band of jazzers performed two songs “Cure Me” and “Life to Do”. Jake has a truly unique style. His voice has an emotive quality that seems to resonate with anyone that hears it. His songwriting and lyrical approach touch on deep and personal subject matter whilst his soulful delivery incorporates elements of Lauryn Hill and India Arie as well as more alternative artists such as Tori Amos.
Next was the new signing to SoulShack productions Georgia Ptohides. Performing with her band Georgia brought an upbeat pop/ska vibe to the evenings proceedings. Georgia’s vocals and songwriting are somewhat reminiscent of early No Doubt and the upbeat energy of her tracks certainly got the crowed going. Georgia is currently working with SoulShack productions on her debut album. Watch this space!

Next the six piece band Assortment Dedicate performed a 70’s inspired set of alternative funk. These guys had stage presence in abundance and considering this was only their second gig were certainly a crowd favorite. Defiantly one to watch!

Rounding off the night was up and coming rapper Lady Lush who has just come off tour with AR Rahman on his "JAI HO" world tour. As well as being am immensely talented rapper, Lush dropped some impressive moves to her unique brand of Hip Hop. Certainly one to watch as Lush has just been booked for another twenty five dates on the AR Rahman tour.

The thing that really sets SoulShack apart from other live music nights is the atmosphere that has been created. Even after just one visit you really do feel welcomed into the SoulShack family. That and the genuine level of talent on offer make this a must for any UK soul fans.
JJ’s SoulShack takes place on the first Friday of every month at Archways Dusk Till Dawn.
