Even the rain (and countless Snoop related jokes about drizzle) couldn’t dampen this MOBO reporter’s spirits on what shall hence forth be named ‘The Day of Snoop’. Rocking my best waterproofs and armed with a brolly I headed down to Victoria Park for a day of muddy merriment.
The performances at Lovebox are a mash-up of hip hop, pop, drum ‘n’ bass, indie and house – with a smattering of reggae and rock for good measure. The eclectic line-up included a host of premium urban acts such as Ziggy Marley, the legend that is David Rodigan, Shy FX, our girl Katy B, De La Soul (covering for a broken footed Jessie J) and, of course, the Dogg Father himself.
Ever the baller, Snoop sloped on stage complete with trademark pig tails and decked out in his baggy hip hop pants. A blingin’, diamond encrusted microphone emblazoned with his name (in case anyone dare forget) formed the focal point of his rap superstar look. Bringing an all star line-up of Warren G, Korrupt, Lady of Rage and Daz Dillenger with him, Snoop tore through his highly anticipated Doggystyle set.
The downside to Snoop’s appearance was the annoying amount of video clips that littered his set. Yes, they were well put together and featured some big name hip hoppers but they failed to translate in a live setting.
Gangster comedy skits aside, his performance went down well amongst the crowd of wayfarer wearing cool kids and hardcore hip hop fans. Full of the wry humor that he has become well known for, Snoop took over the stage, despite his slim build, and poured out some of the key hits that have helped to put him firmly on the rap map.
A highly anticipated headliner at one of London's key music festivals. Were you there and if so what did you think of Snoop Dogg's performance...did he drop it like it's hot?
