XOYO was the venue, Jessica 6 was the act, a perfect combination. The Brooklyn-based Trio announced themselves in Britain to be one of the names for the future.
The night started with DJ Prince Nelly warming up the crowd as they slowly but surely scrambled in. Mixing a selection of 80s throw backs from the likes of New Order and Depeche Mode with a modern day popular culture twist, Prince Nelly was indeed on top form despite the lack of support from the silent and cautious listeners.
The other DJs who performed their sets received a grander and more exuberant reaction. Obviously more awake and refreshed from the alcohol consumed during the course of the night, the audience seemed to have found their mojo as they threw shapes all across the dance floor. With Damon Martin and The Lovely Jonjo both blasting Electro Pop hits from the giant speakers, the randy spectators danced happily into the early hours the following morning.
This however, was not before Jessica 6 – the alter-ego of Nomi Ruiz- made an impression on the night. Together with the talented bassist Andrew Raposo and Synth superstar Morgan Wiley, Jessica 6 performed together like a match made in harmony.
The trio delighted their loving followers with a selection of different tracks from their catalogue. Blending with a number of different genres including Alternative Rock, House, Hip Hop and Soul, they whipped up a storm fit enough for a bigger venue than the XOYO and a more substantial crowd than the one that was there on the night.
The name Jessica 6 comes from a character that was in the cult classic Logan’s Run in which the civilians expire when they reach the age of 30. I hope that is not the case for this group.
With huge promise comes great responsibility, and Jessica 6 put on a fantastic night of entertainment. Sporting tracks such as I’m Deranged and Not Anymore, you could clearly see they had some swagger about them to bring the whole night together without a hitch.
Nomi did however possess something pretty unexpected (to this MOBO reporter anyway); she was the spitting image of famous film star and musician, Juliette Lewis. She looked, moved and even sounded like the Californian starlet. Entertaining and something of a spectacle, but perhaps her sexy propagations on-stage were a bit too much too soon. The future though does look bright and if they continue to raise their game, who knows what they can accomplish.
