Last night some of the biggest stars in music descended on London’s Earls Court for the 30th annual Brit Awards. Hosted by comedian Peter Kay, the awards celebrated the best of the year’s talent across the whole spectrum of the music industry from both the UK and internationally. Now in their 30th year, the awards were tailored to reflect this fact with the introduction of the Best Brits Performance of 30 years award which went to the Spice Girls and the Best Album of 30 years which went to Oasis. JLS added to their growing award collection – that started off with two MOBO Awards – when they picked up the Best British Breakthrough and Best Single Awards. Dizzee Rascal won his first ever Brit Award for Best British Solo Artist to which he promptly replied “about time too”. Dizzee then took to the stage for a cross genre duet with Florence and the Machine. In fact this year’s show was one of the best in terms of the representation of urban music and this culminated in one of the most exciting appearances of the night when Jay Z and Alicia Keys took to the stage to perform their huge hit “Empire State Of Mind”. Jay Z then went on to win the award for Best International Male Solo Artist.
However the night really belonged to the one and only Lady Gaga. In memorial to the death of designer and friend Alexander McQueen, Lady Gaga reworked her set at the last minute in a moving tribute to him. Appearing at a white piano and next to a 15 ft statue of one of McQueen’s many elaborate creations, Gaga performed a stripped down acoustic version of her newest hit Telephone. She then segued into “Dance in the Dark” from her new album “The Fame Monster”. She then went on to win three awards for Best International Breakthrough, Best International Female and Best International Album. When Gaga took to the stage to accept her third award of the night, she was overcome with emotion and close to tears. “I was really excited to win the first two awards. This award means even more to me because I worked so hard on this album for so long. My fans were the first to ever believe in me”.
