Ahead of a headline performance on the West Holts stage at Glastonbury this Saturday, Big Boi wanted to get some last minute practice in the heart of London at the up and coming music venue Heaven. With the support of the very beautiful and talented artist Yasmin, fans flocked to Charing Cross in their numbers to see the highly anticipated show.
With only one solo album to his name, many thought the show would just involve the main mans songs from Sir Lucious Left foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty. But no, the whole back catalogue of Outkast tracks was also on the agenda of Big Boi’s disposal. Imagining expecting very little then getting much more than anticipated is a welcome reward.
Big Boi’s presence on the low down stage was quite a remarkable sight. Though doing the same swinging back and forth dance move throughout the concert, everyone saw the rapping prowess of a man who has been in the game since the early 90s and swayed with him. After the first few tracks, he asked the audience which song they wanted to hear. A young lady in the front shouted out Ms Jackson and Big Boi responded, ‘I never argue with a pretty woman’. After that point, Heaven capacity though only just over a thousand seemed like there was over 10,000 at least.
Hit after hit was blasted out of the speakers without a second to breathe in-between. ‘Rosa Parks’, ‘Follow Us’ and ‘B.O.B’ were all dropped to perfection. Then, Big Boi asked all the pretty girls to join him on stage because he likes the way they move, cue for the hit single from the Speakerboxxx album ‘The Way You Move’ to get heart pumping. After leaving the stage (the girls that is), the songs kept coming quick and fast. ‘Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik’, ‘Elevators Me And You’ and the hit from his solo outing ‘Shutterbug’ molded into one. If the place wasn’t rocking enough, a cover of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ made sure every inch of the floor boards got a scratch or two.
As the encore proceeded, Big Boi asked the girls again to come up on stage, as if he didn’t get enough fun last time around. Leaving his two most booty shaking songs to the end ‘Tangerine’ and ‘You Ain’t No DJ’, he definitely got an eyeful. Leaving the stage in innocuous circumstances did make for an awkward ending, maybe he hates saying goodbye. Nonetheless, the night was all round enjoyable which was created by a fantastic marksman.
He will be performing tomorrow at Glastonbury in front of a fair number of lucky civilians who managed to get tickets for the festival. If I was one of them and I had the choice to see either Big Boi or the headline act Coldplay, I know there is only one answer to that, the man from Atlanta Georgia himself.
