Reaching leaps and bounds after the last record, Andy and the guys have been showing off their exploits on the big screen in some big features. Now back with a host of new tracks that include the not so touchy topics of profanity, dancing styles, fashion, popular movies and more profanity. The boys may have surpassed their first attempt.
Big name artists join The Lonely Island on the record suitably titled Turtleneck & Chain (mainly because of the times it is referred to in the album) including Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, Beck, Michael Bolton, Santigold, Akon and the return of Justin Timberlake as this record brings out the personality of the artists we feared didn’t have one.
Most of these songs have added comic value as they are accompanied by a music video which are so over the top, you just can’t help to laugh out load. Take the track I Just Had Sex for example. Where their classic 'Jizz My Pants' mocked the electro/dance music movement, 'I Just Had Sex' pokes fun at some typical R&B style tracks while talking about stereotypical mens reactions to making love to their unsatisfied girlfriends. .
The guys do have some talent when it comes to music production. They use different sounds, beats and melodies for each song to make sure their music spans across many peoples preferences towards Hip Hop. Whether it is 90s Hip Hop (Rocky), Angry Hip Hop (We’re Back), Romantic Hip Hop (Motherlover), Electro Hop (Turtleneck & Chain) or Hip House (Threw It on The Ground), there is something for everyone to relate to.
One of my personal favourites is the track called Japan which is about how the guys have never been to the country so they wrote a song about it to force the record label to pay for all of their expenses when filming the video. The perks of releasing a record are highlighted here for the world to see.
All in all, The Lonely Island do what they do best, they don’t take themselves too seriously. As a result, the tracks are funny and not too in your face. The record is released on these shores on May the 10th. With high viewing numbers for their YouTube videos, it’s safe to say that Turtleneck & Chain won’t be a flop. MOBO gives this album 3 M’s out of 5.
